The first case was found in China.
The new coronavirus was discovered in Wuhan, a city in central China’s Hubei province. The infection then spread from Hubei Province to other provinces in mainland China and further to numerous countries in the rest of the world. The number of new infections has now fallen in China.
What is the coronavirus?
Corona viruses refer to a family of different viruses. The name comes from the fact that the virus looks similar to a crown under a microscope. There are several different corona viruses – most of them can be found in different animal species. A few types of coronavirus are transmissible from animals to humans. There are a total of seven types of corona viruses that can infect humans. Most cause a common cold. The recently discovered coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 can cause more serious respiratory problems. SARS stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which can be translated as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (lung disease).
Previous serious manifestations of the coronavirus
Previously, two other coronaviruses were able to spread widely and have led to more serious illnesses. First, it was the virus that caused SARS in 2003-2004. It was first discovered in China and then spread to other countries via traveling individuals. A total of around 8,000 people fell ill, of whom 750 died. Then there was the MERS coronavirus, which was discovered in the Arabian Peninsula in 2012 and is still registering new cases. All people who have contracted MERS so far have been closely linked to cases of infection in countries around the Arabian Peninsula. By 2016, 1,700 cases had been confirmed, including 600 deaths.
