Erection problems: That’s what doctors advise

Nobody likes to talk about erectile dysfunction. Luckily, they can usually be treated well. A first step is dealing with the problem openly – in the relationship and in the doctor’s consultation. Med-Healths doctor Dr. Rhianna McClymont answers the most frequently asked questions on the topic.

Erectile dysfunction (erectile dysfunction) is not uncommon. The older a man is, the more likely he is to deal with erectile dysfunction. One in ten men over 40 is affected, and one in three men over 60 is affected.

But younger men can also be affected – according to studies, up to 46% of men under 40 have already experienced erectile dysfunction. And the number of unreported cases is likely to be high, since hardly anyone likes to talk about it.

Erectile dysfunction is not just a sexual problem

We live in a culture that is often about performance – even in bed. That alone can lead to stress and anxiety that only makes the problem worse. Many who struggle with potency problems suffer in silence, trying to somehow ignore the issue.

However, erectile dysfunction is not only related to sexuality. It can also be a sign of a serious condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. These underlying diseases sometimes cause circulatory disorders, which in turn can prevent an erection. This is why it is so important to get a doctor’s opinion if you have erection problems.

In addition, erectile dysfunction can also scratch self-confidence, lead to frustration and psychological problems.

The good news: Sometimes a change in lifestyle is enough to successfully combat erectile dysfunction. We have with Med-Healths doctor Dr. Rhianna McClymont spoke to raise awareness of the unpopular topic and answer common questions. It doesn’t matter whether you are affected yourself or your partner: Here you will find tips for self-help with erectile dysfunction – and you will find out where you can get confidential help.

How do I talk about this with my partner?

Talking about erection problems is never easy. When the problem arises, both should remain relaxed. “Any man can have trouble getting or maintaining an erection at times. There are many different reasons for this and there are often psychological factors behind it,” says Dr. McClymont.

“Give your partner time. Gently encourage him to seek help without pressuring him. Listen to him without judgment when he is experiencing stress or mental health issues. Try not to take your partner’s erection problems personally.”

Remember that sex isn’t just about the act of sex. “As a couple, you can express your sexuality and be intimate in many different ways.”

What is the cause of erection problems?

Several factors often come together in erectile dysfunction. Medicine assumes that erectile dysfunction in younger men is more psychological, while it occurs in older men as an accompanying symptom of physical illness. It is estimated that a total of about half of the potency problems are related to physical causes. When it comes to physical causes, diabetes mellitus , arteriosclerosis and vascular anomalies are the most common – in about 45% of cases.

A third is due to psychological reasons such as stress, depression and fear of failure. In 20% of those affected, body and psyche interact.

Who is particularly affected?

“Occasional episodes of erectile dysfunction can occur in men of any age,” said Dr. McClymont. “However, persistent erection problems tend to be more likely to occur in men over 40 because diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and neurological disorders are more common at this age and can affect circulation.”

In order for an erection to come about and be maintained, the penis must have sufficient blood flow. Conditions such as atherosclerosis, in which the arteries are narrowed by fatty deposits of substances such as cholesterol, restrict blood flow and impede the process of getting an erection.

“Medications can also cause erectile dysfunction as a side effect,” adds Dr. McClymont added. These include commonly prescribed drugs for depression, high blood pressure , or diuretics.

What can I do myself if I have erection problems?

Studies confirm that physical activity can improve erectile function. The background: Regular exercise can prevent diseases that are caused by a lack of exercise and are often associated with erection problems.

An analysis of several studies found that 40 minutes of cardio exercise (the kind that makes you sweat) can reduce erectile dysfunction – provided you exercise 4 times a week for at least 6 months .

In addition, you can avoid risk factors that can affect the ability to have an erection. This includes

Try to lose weight if you are overweight. Watch your alcohol consumption , avoid drugs and try to lower your stress level . If you are cycling, you should make sure that your saddle is comfortable and properly adjusted.

“Stress and excessive alcohol consumption are common triggers of erectile dysfunction,” says Dr. McClymont. “If a man occasionally has erectile problems because he might have had a little too much to drink or is stressed out at work, that’s nothing to worry about at first.”

When should I speak to a doctor?

Many men wait a very long time before seeking medical help. However, no man should shy away from talking to his doctor, because they are trained in dealing with erectile dysfunction. If you have had erection problems for several weeks, you can first book a doctor’s appointment with Med-Healths and get a medical assessment in a discreet way. The doctor’s consultation will help you to track down the cause of your problems.

How is erectile dysfunction treated?

Luckily, most erectile dysfunction is treatable. Your doctor will first ask you about your exact symptoms. Blood and urine tests may also be done at the local doctor’s office to check for underlying medical conditions.

Your doctor can advise you on how you can change your lifestyle habits to get the disorder under control. If that’s not enough, there are other treatment options.

medication

So-called PDE-5 inhibitors are used most frequently for erectile dysfunction. These include sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil: These active ingredients block the enzyme PDE-5, which allows the muscles of the penis to relax and the blood supply to the erectile tissue to improve. They only work when you are sexually aroused. The tablets help 70 to 80% of those affected and require a prescription .

Before you use it for the first time, you should consult a doctor to find out about possible risks – and get medical advice if you experience any side effects. Doctors warn against counterfeit products that are sold online without a prescription – they can cause serious side effects.

The vacuum pump

You may have heard of vacuum therapy. A cylinder with a pump is placed on the penis and a vacuum is created. This causes blood to flow into the erectile tissue and an erection occurs. A rubber ring prevents the blood from draining out again. If the vacuum pump is prescribed by a doctor, the health insurance usually covers the costs.

testosterone treatment

In some cases, testosterone levels play a role in the development of erectile dysfunction. You and your doctor decide whether hormone therapy makes sense in your case.
