Scabies (technically known as scabies) is an itchy skin condition caused by an infestation of the skin with mites. Mites penetrate the skin to lay their eggs. This often causes an intense itching sensation that is particularly worse at night.
symptoms of scabies
The initial stage of scabies is usually not associated with symptoms. Only 2 to 3 weeks after a mite infestation does the disease usually manifest itself in severe itching, a rash or even a burning sensation, especially in the affected regions. Body regions with a high temperature and a thin skin layer are preferred by mites. This includes:
- spaces between the fingers and toes
- Skin folds in the wrists, elbows and knees
- Axillary folds (front and back of the armpit)
- belly button
- Brustwarzenhof
- genital area
- Cut
- waistline
The rash is usually visible in the form of small reddened pustular or nodular skin changes.
Causes of Scabies
Scabies is mainly transmitted through close skin contact. Typically, healthy people are infected via affected family members (parents, siblings), sexual partners or those in need of care. In some cases, scabies also spreads through used clothes and bed linens.
scabies in children
Scabies can affect people of all ages. However, children can show more severe symptoms than adults. Children often have a pronounced rash on the palms of their hands and soles of their feet. In infants and young children, the scalp can also be infested with mites.
Diagnosis: How Can a Doctor Diagnose Scabies?
Typical is a sudden severe itching on the characteristic parts of the
body, which gets worse at night. The suspicion of scabies increases when another family member is also affected. In order to secure the diagnosis, a microscopic detection of mites or their eggs should be carried out.
When do I have to go to the doctor?
If you notice severe itching or a rash, see a doctor as scabies is contagious and can cause skin infections.
therapy for scabies
Treating scabies involves killing the mites in the skin to prevent them from being passed on to others. This can be achieved by the following measures, among others:
- Use of a suitable ointment against scabies: Mites live in the upper layer of the skin and can often be easily removed with the help of an anti-scabies cream.
- It is recommended to wash any clothes, bedding, towels or other contaminated items with hot water (50°C for 10 minutes) and tumble dry at high temperature.
- In some cases it is advisable to treat people close to you, even if they have no complaints.
- If the itching persists during or after treatment, antiallergic medication can be used to relieve the itching after consulting your doctor.
