Vaginal thrush is a common reason for visiting a doctor or pharmacy. Most of the time, the fungal infestation is noticed by a very strong itching and is very unpleasant for the affected patients. The problem can be easily got under control with a treatment lasting one to several days and by observing a few rules.

Definition

The so-called vaginal fungal infection is a fungal attack in the vagina. The disease is also known as vaginal mycosis, vaginal thrush or vulvovaginal mycosis.

Causes and risk of infection

In most cases, the infection is caused by the yeast Candida albicans . Fungi are a natural part of the acidic flora in the vagina and are not usually harmful. If there is only a Candida colonization without infection, no therapy is necessary. As soon as the pH value of the vaginal environment changes to a less acidic range, the fungi can multiply unhindered and cause the classic symptoms. This happens, for example, with a weakened immune system in the context of stress, hormone fluctuations or other diseases such as diabetes mellitus.

The use of oral contraceptives and the plastic spiral were also mentioned as risk factors for vaginal mycosis in the most recent studies. Most often, however, drugs are the cause of the changed vaginal pH value and offer fungi the opportunity to settle and multiply.

There is also a higher risk of contracting the disease during pregnancy. There is also the possibility of contracting the disease from your sexual partner. However, there is no risk of infection in swimming pools, saunas or fitness studios .

symptoms

In the foreground is a very strong itching of the vagina. In addition, many patients notice a whitish, crumbly, odorless discharge in their underwear. The intimate area can be red or affected by white plaque. Pain can also occur during sexual intercourse and urination.

duration

With the right treatment, a fungal infection usually lasts only a few days. Without therapy, it can drag on for a very long time and may even get worse.

Doctor consultation and diagnosis

As soon as you notice an atypical vaginal discharge or any of the above symptoms, you should consult a doctor. He can help you figure out what it is. It is important to rule out other STDs or a bladder infection.
The doctor will ask you some questions about your symptoms. For example, he will ask you how long the itching has lasted and if you have had any other symptoms. If necessary, he will also ask you about your sexual behavior in order to rule out sexually transmitted diseases. It is possible to take a swab of the vagina and examine it under a microscope. A physical exam may also be performed to make the correct diagnosis. In addition, if necessary, a culture can be set up to diagnose the type of fungus.

therapy

In the treatment of vaginal fungus, so-called “antifungal” drugs are suitable, which are directed against the growth of the fungus. These come in the form of ointments and vaginal suppositories. These preparations are usually available over the counter in any pharmacy. It is also possible to take systemic action against the fungus by taking tablets. This is necessary in some cases and must be prescribed by a doctor. With the right therapy, the disease resolves within a few days.

Caution: Some of the local antifungal agents reduce the protective effect of condoms. It is recommended to refrain from sexual intercourse during use. This can also prevent the partner from being infected.

If the symptoms persist or worsen during therapy, a doctor should be consulted in any case.
If the partner is also affected by the symptoms, antifungal treatment is worthwhile. In this way, a mutual new infection can be avoided.

After the disease has healed, reinfection can occur at any time.

You can take a few measures yourself to prevent a fungal infection or to support treatment:

  • Wash your private parts with water. Soap, shampoo and wet wipes can damage the natural vaginal environment and provide a breeding ground for fungi.
  • Wear breathable underwear , such as cotton.
  • Wash your underwear and towels at at least 60 degrees Celsius. You should also make sure to change your underwear every day.
  • In the case of recurrent vaginal yeast infections, a lactic acid bacteria treatment can help to maintain the natural pH.
  • Refrain from sexual intercourse during the infection to protect your partner from infection.

vaginal thrush during pregnancy

Pregnant women are very often affected by fungal colonization. In this case, the treatment is a little more generous and the patient is always advised to take antifungal therapy. This is because a maternal yeast infection can trigger oral thrush and diaper rash in the newborn.
When treating during pregnancy, there are special rules that should be discussed with a doctor.

fungal infection in men

Men can also contract a fungal infection in the genital area and on the penis. In this case one speaks of candida balanitis . The classic symptoms such as itching and redness also apply here. In addition, small blisters and whitish/greyish changes on and under the foreskin can occur. Antifungal ointments, which put an end to fungal growth, are suitable as therapy.
